Prayer Requests

Thanks for remembering to pray!
1. Please pray for the flooded communities Let's
continue to pray for the church families and communities who have suffered
in the recent storms and also for those who God raises up to help in this
time of significant need and prime ministry opportunities.
2. Please continue to pray for BGC President, Dr. Jerry Sheveland and
his family Let's continue to intercede for our brother and his family
as they grieve Dawn's homegoing and as they move through the days ahead.
3. Please pray for our new Urban and Ethnic Ministries Please pray
that God continues to bless and prosper these initiatives as we co labor
with Pastor Chuck Ells in the American Indian Initiative and with Pastor
Carlos Bulalayao in the Filipino Church Plant Initiative in the Janesville
area.
4. Please pray for the youth groups across our district Some churches
are taking groups on mission trips, training youth leaders or planning for
the fall. Pray that God would continue to call and energize people to
lead and influence young people in their communities. Pray that the youth
themselves would be outspoken for Christ as they befriend and minister to
their own peer group.
5. Please pray for churches involved in compassion
ministries Several of our member church families are
involved in helping those in need: pregnancy counseling, feeding and
housing the poor, visiting prisoners, help in overcoming addictions,
chaplains to businesses, after school programs and more. May God give
them wisdom, provide for their needs, and give them great hope as they pass
on the love of Christ.
We sincerely thank you for your prayers. Let us know how we can
pray for you, too.

Are
you a Desperate (Enough)?
My Dear Missionaries, (Yes, you!)
For years I have kept a topical file as a resource for preaching and
teaching. If I read something insightful or interesting I file it
for future reference. After almost thirty years of reading and
filing, guess which topic has created the thickest file. Go ahead
guess. Come on, guess. Have you guessed yet?
That's right. Prayer. In fact, the topic of prayer has
several files in my system. I could resource people to pray a
hundred different ways. I could tell a thousand inspirational stories
about prayer. But, I have found that is not a prayer methodology or
a "prayer story" that moves people to pray. Desperation
moves people to pray. People pray when they feel a deep need
for God to intervene in their lives and communities. Are you
desperate? If so, I call you, my brothers and sisters, to prayer!
Let me inform you about some of the ways we are calling the mission
churches of the GLBC to come together in prayer.
1.
First,
there is the Annual Pastor's Prayer Gathering. Twenty-four
hours of prayer and worship for pastors. This year's prayer gathering is
September 15-16, hosted by Salem Baptist, Eau Claire, WI.
Registration information has been sent to GLBC pastors, but you can also

2.
Second,
there is the GLBC Annual Meeting Concert of Prayer. On the
morning of October 24, before we gather as a conference to celebrate this
past year of mission, we will pray.

Third,
at each Area Meeting in the District, we will spend some time
praying this Fall for the mission and ministry of the churches of that
area. The date of your Area Meeting is available below and on the
calendar at www.glbc.net.
4.
One
final word about the prayer movement of the GLBC mission: We would
love to come and lead weekend prayer summits in our churches. These
will be weekends of teaching about prayer times of prayer. If you

Desperation moves people to
pray. Pastor Russ Shearer, GLBC's Church Planting
Director of Coaching and Training, has been sharing some sobering
statistics about the percentages of people in Wisconsin and the UP who
attend church - any church. Did you know that over 70% of people
in the UP and Wisconsin DO NOT attend church anywhere? Our numbers
are falling faster than the states around us. Only three counties showed
an increase in church attendance percentages in the past ten years.
Most of our counties have percentages in the twenties. That is, one in
five people have a church connection to any church!
There is much work to be done. We need to be more committed to
evangelism than ever. We need to start more churches than
ever. We need to mobilize more churches than ever. We need
more connections to lost people than we have ever had. But what we
must do more than all of those essentials is this one: Pray!
Desperation moves people to pray. The fact is that we are
losing ground. The fact is that lost people enter a Christ-less
eternity in greater numbers than ever before. The fact is that a
Sovereign God has called us to pray for all men everywhere, to pray
without ceasing, to pray for workers in the harvest, to pray for the
advance of the Gospel. Desperation moves people to pray.
Desperate? Let's pray. History reminds us that all
great movements of God are preceded by the people of God gathered to
pray.

Negotiating Church Conflict
Join us for GLBC's Fall 2008 Area Meetings
This Fall, resolve to become a more effective church
family!
1. Conflict in Church?
Yes, unfortunately, just like any family, church families also go through
times of conflict and sometimes hurt one another. Whether it's intentional
or not, the pain is real and can cause damage if not handled properly. This
free event is a preview of the specialized training for Pastors and Boards
offered in Spring 2009 from GLBC's Dr. Dwight Perry (District Executive
Minister) and Dr. Stu Dix (Assoc. DEM - Mobilization)! These meetings
are for pastors and other church leaders who'd like to learn healthy ways
to deal with conflict. Discover practical ways to get passed church
conflict and become a healthier church family!
2. Invest significant time interceding together in a Concert
of Prayer.
